Tech Specs
ProCraft 3/8 inch 7x7x7 Galvanized Cable Laid Log Wrapper
24 feet with 2 Feet and 6 Feet of 1/4 inch Grade 70 Chain
Overall Length: 32 Feet
Working Load Limit: 3000 lbs.
Breaking Strength: 12,000 lbs.*
*meets BC Worksafe Standard 26.68.4 Binders: Each binder and attachement must have a breaking strength of 53kN (12,000 lbs.)
To acheive this standard and to maintain the low weight, adjustments had to be made to the chain ends to prevent low breaking strength. Using 3/8 inch 7x7x7 cable directly into 1/4 inch Grade 70 chain creates a stress point where the wire bends arround the chain. This results in breaking strength that is lower than the catalogue breaking strength of the wire rope. This is because of the chain effectively cutting the wires due to the small bend radius of the chain. While these tests were conducted on new wire and new chain, the service life in the field would be greatly reduced as the wear in the eyes would degrade and compromised the strength of the rope.
Using a modified end link, the overall weight can be reduced, but the structural strength of the eye can still be achieved.
Left SIde: 5/16 inch Diameter Chain Right Side: 3/8 inch Diameter Chain
Tests conducted using larger 5/16 and 3/8 inch Grade 70 chain show eyes surviving the destruction testing. It should be noted that the 3/8 inch grade 70 caused less eye deformation.
The result is a high-brid chains with one enlarged end link to attach to the wire rope.
To further enhance the benefits of the new wrapper, the following upgrades will become standard:
- one chain tail is 2 feet long and the other is 6 feet long. This is to address the long standing problem of throwing weight. Traditional 4 feet of 5/16 grade 70 weighs 4.5 lbs. vs 2 feet of 1/4 grade 70 at 1.4 lbs.
- full size aluminum identification tag stamped with: Manufacturer, Working load limit, Breaking Strength, BC Worksafe Standard 26.68.4 compliant, and date of manufacture
-all chain ends are now environmentally treated with a White Chromate finish. This is a Cr6+ free finish. Traditional yellow chromate grade 70 used a hexavalent chromium that was harmful to the environment. Yellow Chomate has be banned in the EU since 2007.
