Working Load Limit is the maximum line tension in pounds. It is not based on the weight of the log, but the maximum pulling force the choker can be subjected to as log is being skidded. Factors such as terain slope, shock loading, and snags must be taken into account when selecting size.
Logging chokers are available in 3 different configurations:
Knob & Knob Chokers - commonly used in yarding operations
Knob & Eye Chokers (Cat Chokers) - common type used when eye is necessary for pulling logs
Knob & Eye & Ring Chokers (Skidder Chokers) - least common, used only with older winch line skidders
Logging hardware (knobs, choker bells, spiral ferrules, etc.) are classified by the size of knob that will seat in the receiving pocket. It is important to use same type hardware and knobs throughout entire logging system to ensure all choker knobs seat properly.
In ascending order type:
Midget(M): 3/8 to 9/16 inch diameter cable
Dwarf(D) also called Light Bantam(LB): 7/16 to 5/8 inch diameter cable
Bantam(B): 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter cable
Light(L): 3/4 to 1 inch diameter cable
Light Junior(LJ) also called Junior(J): 7/8 to 1-1/4 inch diameter cable
Standard(S): 1-1/4 to 1-3/8 inch diameter cable
